| WHAT DO ACCOUNTANTS CHARGE?
Like other professionals, accountants do not sell a product – they render a service. It is natural for a prospective client – or even an existing client seeking a new service – to be concerned about the cost of that service. Also like other professionals, accountants understand that their fees must be competitive.
At the heart of every fee is the training, knowledge and experience the accountant brings to a client's particular situation. Accountants constantly strive to keep up-to-date on changes in the tax law, in accounting procedures, in technology and in the financial services industry, in order to provide competent services at reasonable fees.
The accounting profession does not set fixed or minimum fees. In your first visit to a prospective accountant's office, by all means engage in a frank and complete discussion of the fees to be charged. Your accountant will want it this way. It is essential that you both have a complete understanding of the professional services you wish to be performed. Even if you have been using your accountant's services for a number of years, you should always understand fully the fees he or she charges. This is especially so if you want your accountant to expand the scope of the services currently provided.
